鹿港古蹟保存區是台灣第一個以古市街保存的範例，其範圍包括埔頭街、瑤林街、後車巷、大有街、泉州街、金盛巷及中山路等數百棟精緻民宅。

　　早期鹿港街道的發展即沿著舊鹿港溪發展，埔頭街、瑤林街是鹿港最早的市街，其商業經營型態以船頭行兼大盤商為主，商家本身擁有船隻與中國通商。乾隆49年（1784）鹿港開港為正口後，埔頭街與瑤林街迅速發展，故有不少的船頭行，如合和、合德堂、合利行等。

　　Lukang Historical Reservation Area is the first pattern of the old market street preserved in Taiwan. The area includes hundreds of exquisite residences on Butou Street, Yaolin Street, Houche Lane, Dayou Street, Quanzhou Street, Jincheng Lane, and Zhong Shan Road.

　　In the past, Lukang streets were developed along the old Lukang Stream. Butou Street and Yaolin Street were the earliest market streets where shipping firms and trade business were conducted, mainly with China. In 1784 Lukang Harbor was opened as an official harbor, and quickly many shipping firms developed on Butou Street and Yaolin Street such as Gehe Hang, Gede Hang, Geli Hang etc.
